is there a way to force wine games to run at reasonable resolutions when you enable scaling? i have a 3440x1440 at 125% scaling and games keep thinking its a 5504x2304 display 😭

wait how is this even happening, im using 125% scaling. it should report the resolution as lower. why is it HIGHER?

scaling is so strange.

@autumn

integer scaling is better supported than fractional scaling. because, with integer scaling you can still render at an integer grid of "logical pixels" for screen space positioning of objects. so code that wasn't written for scaling is way more easily adapted to integer scaling than to fractional scaling, without reworking every data structure everywhere.

if you render at a lower fractional resolution, you "scale" correctly but it gets blurry when displayed on your real screen. you've seen blurry low-resolution shit upscaled.

so the trick is to render at a higher resolution, at 2x scale (or 3x or 4x). if you take
3440 / 125% * 2 you get the horizontal physical resolution as the apps perceive it, of 5504.
this is more work because you're literally rendering more pixels than you will ever see, but when downscaled you don't get a blurry mess of an image. in particular, text is generally more legible when rendered like this compared to a naive 125% scaled fake physical resolution

@sodiboo mmm okay i'll give that a go, should be an easy way to wrap everything in steam or just put it into launch options whenever i need to right?

@autumn yeah . I'd recommend putting it as launch options on a per-game basis because depending on the game, gamescope can have other undesirable effects. most notably, it forces you to commit to a resolution at launch and if you resize the window it gets letterboxed and the entire game shrinks. so i only really ever use it for games that don't window nicely anyways, or which i know i will only ever be playing in fullscreen.
