I Love My Computer - Ninajirachi

Hooooooly fuck I love it so much it's such a great album back to front, there wasn't really a song that I hated. It felt like the first time I had ever listened to Wallsocket by underscores. Just hit after hit, and it didn't really take me some time to adjust to the sound like it usually does. Out of the box it was GREAT. I think it might actually be my favourite album that I've listened to this year assuming nothing awesome comes out.

Honestly on my first listen through, I didn't enjoy the first half of the album. I think I was still adjusting from the previous album I was listening to in the morning. But after listening to it a few more times I realised that it was fuarrkking peak. I really thought it'd be all just banger whatever lyric song (I think the word I associated most with it was normieslop) but after listening to it. It's such a great album, can't believe I didn't listen to it in 2024. I understand all the hype even if I think it wasn't the best thing ever. The album cover is great too. If you take everything into consideration about the album, the cover, the music, the production.

The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance

I was helping my friend with her dissertation and this was a trip down memory lane for her. 😭 Honestly it's a sound that I've heard before and that I enjoyed listening to! I could feel my friend shaking her head through the screen (but also singing along to a lot of it), it's very funny listening for the first time because I'm picking out all of the great imagery for the first time and my friends just got her head in her arms remembering her Phase. It's very similar if I was listening to Bastard or Goblin by Tyler the Creator.

Anyway, it's a great album. I was expecting it to have more of a "hardcore" sound? Maybe I've just been spoiled by listening to Death Grips for the last 9 years. Like oomf said the band is not entirely emo, it's more rock music which I really enjoy. Good rec @fiore Not sure if it has a slot in my playlist, but definitely worth a listen when I'm in the mood.

Fancy That - PinkPantheress

Never realised how nostalgic I was for UK Garage. I heard it all the time just via proximity to everything but I love this sound. It's a quick 20 minute mixtape but it's great!! I had no idea what to expect when my friend recommended it to me, thought it'd be something more relaxing but it's just a level under brat in terms of energy.

I think my favourite song is defo 'Noises', the sample that's mainly used in it reminds me of Regulate by Warren G so much which is an AMAZING song if you haven't heard it yet. It's actually also a song from my early teenage years which adds a bit to the nostalgia lmao. Either way, good rec bestie!! Hopefully the next album won't have someone with a brit accent on it (ninajirachi has a spiritually british accent)

Draw - Draw The Emotional

To be perfectly honest to oomf, I didn't think I'd be a big fan of the vocaloid stuff. (not sure why) I will say though, this album is very familiar to the stuff my brother would listen to a lot when I was younger with a twist of Japanese in the mix. It actually brings up a lot of memory of when I had his Xperia PLAY with his SD card still there and I had all of his music on there, probably the first time I had ever listened to a full song of my own volition (not on the radio or whatever).

Reon - Remind reallllyyy stood out to me. It starts with something so smooth and calm, goes into metal, then goes into Rock? It's such an interesting song, I actually fuck with it sooo heavy.

I have no idea what the songs are actually about, I don't know Japanese and I think part of a song's charm is being able to hear the emotion behind a specific lyric in the moment. I know though that there's probably some insane lore that intersects a bunch of other stuff, idk. It's got a great couple of songs though. I really enjoyed listening to this.

Imaginal Disk - Magdalena Bay

I made the mistake of listening to this the first thing in the morning, at the peak of my caffeine rush, I made a few posts glazing this album back then. I still think it's an AMAZING album though, I think the sign of a good album is catching myself humming it during the day which I was doing a lot of.

My favourite songs are definitely
'That's My Floor' & 'The Ballad of Matt and Mica', but a lot of the other songs I found myself just looping over and over. The final song (the ballad of matt & mica) kept just subverting my expectations of where it was going:
- it starts off slow, im expecting a winding down track
- the bass comes in super powerful out of the blue, i'm now expecting a ramp up
- then the beat comes in and it's a lot slower than i thought it'd be.
The entire album is like this, a completely unique sound that I can't really compare to anything (within my limited scope of music anyway).

(also sidenote, "love is everywhere" reminds me a lot of "complexion (a zulu love)" by kendrick lamar which is cool)

Perverts - Ethel Cain

I'm not usually one for ambient albums. Honestly, this is my first listen for any ambient album. But a lot of the main things that I look for in music is lyrics. And I definitely got my fill, I guess, in a way, with this album. It's very, very, I don't know how it's to say, but relatable to a point in my life where I was struggling with that sort of thing. I won't go into more details about that, but one of my favorite songs on the album is called Punish, and that's definitely the sort of thing that I would have probably put on repeat in that sort of darker period of my life.

I don't know how else to explain it, but that feeling that I got when I was within that period of my life that I've just come out of, it sounds like this album. The album sounds like that emotion. I'm drawn to Vacillator in particular, and I can't tell why. There's a lot of unexplainable emotions that happened and I think the answer is listening through it again and again.

This is something you listen to in full, it feels wrong to add my "favourite song" into a playlist, it needs to be experienced in full everytime. This isn't something I thought I'd enjoy but I ended up getting a lot out of it.

THE FUCK YOU MEAN HE WAS BORN 2009, I guess that actually explains the contents of the album. It actually reminds me a lot of Juice WRLD (in terms of what he raps about. also sorry for obvious comparison.) which is what I was listening to... when I was the artist's age. Jesus.

Other than that, incredibly talented!! It's very funny because I had a rap phase for a very long time, and I can hear a lot of influence within this album, other than a lot of the EDM + Hyperpop stuff, the guy in track 2 sounds like Earl Sweatshirt 😭 on Doris or Some Rap Songs. It's like you took a blender with a lot of the albums I was listening to pre-18, and then stuff I listen to now. It's sooo interesting.

Lateralus - Tool

I wasn't really a big fan! Idk what that's really about, I sort of had a connection to the other stuff in one way or another. Or it sounded really unique. I think it's just a personal thing where I've probably heard everything that this ended up inspiring, so the source material and inspiration of the later stuff feels stale, but there should still be respect put on its name because it started that. Or maybe I'm talking out of my ass because I don't know the context of this album (and the rest of them too lmao).

I'm not gonna sit and pretend to know anything about music to critique this album because I don't know shit about music, and esp not this genre, but it just didn't click for me? Everything else sort of was able to fit in my head somewhere and I got into the right headspace but this just didn't do that. Maybe I have to listen to it a bit more. Anyway thanks for the rec either way!! Not my thing but still appreciate listening to something I wouldn't usually pick out :P

F♯ A♯ ∞ - Godspeed You! Black Emperor

So as I said ambient music isn't really my thing but I still really enjoyed this, more than I thought I would. It's very atmospheric. I really enjoy the 'skits' or the in-between voice lines where it just sort of builds this atmosphere and this music just goes perfectly with it.

It sort of tells a mini-story and I really enjoyed listening to the end track Providence that's just a conversation with two people, the details of the noises in the background, the stuttering, it all feels like someone had mic-ed up a real person for this conversation (reminds me of Ralph Bakshi recording real voicelines in a bar and animating them into Fritz The Cat).

I did prefer Ethel Cain's Perverts to this album just because it felt a lot more personal to myself, but I don't think a comparison between the two is really warranted. They're just the only two ambient albums I've ever listened to. Either way, thanks for the recommendation Anna :P

@annamaria @sierra @autumn almost anything made by Celer, which is an insanely large backlog. I used to pay him yearly just to support his work and get access to unreleased stuff which I listen to often. Good starting points for them are:

Celer - Continents
Celer - Discourses of the Withered

Besides that Stars of the Lid is an obvious given but has to be mentioned here. Tim Heckers "Haunt me haunt me do it again" slaps as well imo. Grouper is really good if you're down for wet distorted guitar and haunting vocals.

Once I'm off work I can dive into my full library and pull out other random ones, but those are the cream de la creme IMO.

Celer used to be a husband and wife duo until the wife died of brain cancer. Before that she also made albums under the moniker chubby wolf which is great. Her album Ornitheology is incredible and also has such a good cover

@autumn yeah it's normal for post-rock songs to be extremely long

the way I see it, ambient is "background music," it doesn't require your attention, only serving as an addition to something else. in this way, a lot of video game music is ambient. Minecraft is the best example of this though

post rock is when you write music for a rock-band like you'd write for an orchestra

i think those were recordings of actual interviews w a NY street preacher, like its not 5he band the guy is actually like that . in the track BBF3 on the ep slow riot to new zero kanada theres a longwr & different clip from the same guy.
however the monologue that plays over the beginning of dead flag blues is the band, i think it's one of the guys' failed screenplay. im not rly a GSY!BE superfan idk much of this behind the scenes stuff but like theyrw popular ask someone else
