how do you explain to people that that switch is using a tablet SoC from 2015 and it's not a powerhouse of any kind, and any midrange phone packs more punch these days

@halva i think people intuitively know this because you try playing witcher on that thing and that switch comes back a different man

@halva hopefully the switch 2, a console which i believe has custom hardware(?), will actually work based on the games that are releasing on it but its hard to say, i haven't really been watching the leaks like a hawk.

@autumn switch 2 should be vaguely around the deck, the gpu being significantly faster but it will be severely memory-limited with 12 gigs of shared memory

which is unimpressive in 2025 but i guess it's better than nothing

@halva and i assume that it'll be slightly better than the deck too because they can optimise and hone in on the hardware rather than "lets just use proton and maybe put a preset for steam decks"

@autumn yeah definitely, it's what kept the switch chugging for so long too

there's no way it would still have any relevance if it was running android like other X1 Tegra tablets lol

@halva its interesting to see i think the switch was the last bastion of "Lateral thinking with withered technology" and the CEO after Iwata sort of realised that even though nintendo Could rely on their first party support and people will buy their games, third party support of popular games will make them more money.

It's also in other things, like I don't think Satoru Iwata would have been involved in anything to do with the mobile nintendo games

@autumn tbh i think that nintendo has always been kinda weird and unlike the other 2 big players

they’re still largely all about hw/fw/sw integration and their own ecosystems (reminds of a certain other company…), it’s just that they’ve opened up that perfectly calibrated clockwork machine to other developers

@autumn what's funny to me is that the race for teraflops and budgets led sony and microsoft nowhere, and the switch ended up being one of the most successful consoles in history lol

@halva nintendo's thing is gimmicks and they just roll the dice and sometimes it works (switch) and sometimes it doesn't (Wii U)

@halva i would say another sign of the change of management is that they're just doing a second console that's the same but better, like they've done hardware revisions before (like the New Nintendo 3DS) but this is like a completely new console, it's not an extension of the previous with a few exclusives. they found something that worked and they're gonna do it again.
