someone with 1000 followers boosts my post, doesn't slow down anything. another person with a lot of followers (i assume ???) does and it slows shit down

i actually don't know how many followers the 2nd person has but i assume it's in the 4 digits because of the instance slow down thing

could it be that doskel's (the first person i was referring to) instance nicely trickles in the packets because it doesn't have the capacity to blast it

@autumn my server is like a packet slow cooker. you just set it going in the morning and then get back to it when dinner comes

@doskel slow cooker implies that it's intended to be like that . i would say it's more of a broken oven that leaks heat, it'll still cook everything but it's gonna take 4x the amount of time

no longer kopper @kopper@wetdry.world

@autumn that could legitimately be a reason as the boosts are queued to each separate instance and there's a limit on how many can go at the same time (esp. on mastodon which isn't async io)

but also it's more about how many instances people have followers from and not the follower count itself. someone with 5k followers all from .social will impact you less than someone with 500 single user instance followers

@kopper mmm yeah that makes sense, i assume that doskel would have more followers from instances that i'm already federating with too so that could also be a factor
