@autumn the cool idea was “circles” imo . you basically had like idk , 5? different “levels” to posting (like on fedi you can post for followers only , something like that)

so like , you could post something visible only to your “work” circle , or somethng only for your “family” , or something else as “public”

@fiore @autumn the circles thing was so good that Facebook copied it into the “lists” feature. Both circles and lists also worked as negatives, ie you could EXCLUDE a post from a circle or INCLUDE a post into a circle.

@autumn @fiore for example, I have a “relatives” list, so any of the shenanigans I got up to (like talking to women) could be EXCLUDED from their view, but I also have a “close friends” list so personal posts could be INCLUDED in their view.

The other bonus of the list/circles feature is that people within them could see each other’s comments even if they weren’t friends. So, for example, in my Close Friends list, I have two friends who didn’t know each other – they could still see each others comments and even reply to each other.

But most crucially is that people outside of the Close Friends list could not see the post, nor see their comments at all. Their friends would not know they left a comment unless they were in that list.

This is where the “follower-only” of Mastodon falls down hard.

@yassie_j @fiore yeah that's how i thought that follower-only worked until i learnt it didn't lmao. seems like a really cool feature i wonder if there would be any difficulty actually implementing it into this protocol

@autumn @fiore it would be like having allow-only Federation for one post at a time, which sounds simple on the surface but probably ballache to implement

@autumn @yassie_j i think you dont need it built into the protocol , you can just automatically tag people ina “dm” thread

but ig the “excluding” people wouldnt work very well in that case

@fiore @autumn the funny thing is that G+ was actually not that bad, especially compared to Zucc

The fact that they forced it into EVERYTHING made everyone hate it

But I legit think if they let it grow organically, which it would have because Google has infinite advertising budget, it could have been a strong competitor

I remember I had a few people move directly over there and then they had to come back to Facebook when Google killed it lol
