in the original cut of lord of the rings, peter jackson strayed a lot more from the source material. the initial plan was for sauron's twin towers to be destroyed by gandalf's eagles in a single swoop and a massive explosion, however last minute they changed it and had to make the entire movie from scratch in 2 weeks.
